St John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is a herbaceous plant often found in Europe, America and Northern Africa. The flowering tips are picked at the beginning of the summer around the St John's celebration, hence its name. St John's wort has been used for centuries and we can trace its use back to the 6th century when it was then used topically for the treatment of wounds and burns. It was used in this manner for hundreds of years until the end of the last century when an American scientist described the plant as beneficial for the treatment of mild depression. Recently, clinical studies have highlighted the fact that St John's wort has a stimulant effect on the nervous system, due mainly to its active ingredient, xantone.
