At the beginning of the summer in the south of Europe, Valerian bushes of pink-purple colour flowers, can be seen on embankments and old walls. When the Valerian plant has been dried, it has a very particular odour which attracts cats. The root (from latin valere which means "to be well") contains an essential oil and valepotriates (valtrate and isovaltrate) which both have a very effective and gentle sedative action. Valerian is used with great success for insomnia, anxiety and anguish, but without causing any addiction or drowsiness during the day. When combined with the classical epilepsy treatment it helps the everyday life of epileptic people by contributing to the prevention of attacks (Valerian is recognised as an anticonvulsant and anti-epileptic). It can also be used to help smokers give up the habit as it prevents feelings of nervousness and gives tobacco an unpleasant taste.
