Hawthorn fruit has long been used as a food and medication in Europe. Over the past 20 years, several different commercially available preparations of hawthorn have been investigated in double-blind, placebo­controlled clinical studies. The flavonoids present, notably hyperoside and vitexin, regulate heart rate; consequently they act on excessively rapid rates, reduce heart palpitations and the exaggerated perception of heartbeats by people suffering from anxiety.
