Originally from the Balkan states, Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) was introduced into Western Europe by the British. Feverfew is often referred to as the "big chamomile". Its flowering tips contain parthenolide, which contributes to its anti-migraine activity.
The mechanism that often starts a migraine is now known. Different factors such as stress, emotion, food intolerance, and menstural conditions cause the liberation of the hormone serotonin which provokes alternation of contractions and dialations of the cerebral arteries, causing pain.
Parthenolide blocks the liberation of serotonin, efficaciously preventing the onset of migraine. A three month course permits a noticeable decrease in the frequency and intensity of migraines and relieves people suffering from this painful and stressful ailment.
